How does Acupuncture work?

By inserting fine needles into specific points on the body, acupuncture regulates the flow of Qi, which is a type of energy or electrical type current that travels all over the body in a system of channels or pathways. These channels connect the acupuncture points to the body’s tissues and organs and influence the body’s natural healing response and its ability to restore physical, emotional and mental balance.

What is Qi?

This is a surprisingly complex question as the answer tends to vary depending on who you are talking to. A very general answer to this question is that Qi is the life force of everything. If we are speaking in terms of Qi in Chinese medicine then we can say that Qi is a substance that is produced by the body's internal organs to nourish the mind, body and spirit. Qi also comes from the food we eat and the air we breath (which is why it's so important to eat well and reduce exposure to polluted air).

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different and responds differently to treatment. Factors that are taken into consideration include whether the condition is chronic or acute, the severity of the condition, and whether it is an internal or external condition (eg sore neck as opposed to digestive complaints). Clients are normally informed that they could need anywhere from 6 to 12 sessions before they move to a maintenance program.

I’m a bit scared of needles. Does it hurt?

Not really. Acupuncture needles are very very fine and generally produce no pain. That being said, clients can often feel some sensations in the area. This sensation is known as de qi and is a good thing. Always know though that if at any time you are too uncomfortable your acupuncturist will be happy to remove the needles.

What is Nutritional Medicine? And how can it help?

Nutritional Medicine is a holistic approach to health, utilising the dietary principles of Naturopathic Medicine. We use food, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle recommendations to support patients with their health, whether that be general health maintenance, sports nutrition or chronic disease management.
